DAY 1 Arrive in Rome, Italy Time to rest or start exploring the “Eternal City.” At 5 pm, join your Tour Director and traveling companions and leave the hotel for a special welcome dinner with wine at one of Rome’s lively restaurants. (Dinner)
DAY 2 Rome–Orvieto–Assisi Sightseeing with your Local Guide in Rome this morning features a visit to ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA. Enter Umbria, the “Green Heart of Italy” and land of the Etruscans. Stop in Orvieto, perched high atop a volcanic rock, and ride a FUNICULAR right through the forbidding ramparts. Time to browse through tempting shops in the lanes off Piazza del Duomo and to take pictures of the fabulous gothic CATHEDRAL with its San Brizio Chapel. Continue to Assisi, where you will stay for the next five nights. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 3 Assisi Your walking tour with a Local Guide starts with visits to ST. CLARE’S CHURCH and ST. FRANCIS’ BASILICA, the hub of a religious order devoted to the ideals of humility, forgiveness, simplicity, and love for all God’s creatures. Also visit the CARCERI HERMITAGE, where St. Francis came to meditate and pray; and ST. MARY OF THE ANGELS BASILICA, where St. Francis consecrated St. Clare as the “Bride of Christ.” An exciting excursion to Spello is available. (Breakfast)
DAY 4 Assisi. Excursion to Gubbio Today, visit Gubbio, the town where St. Francis tamed the wolf. Follow your Local Guide and admire the impressive Palazzo dei Consoli overlooking Piazza Grande, the 13th-century cathedral, and magnificent Palazzo Ducale with its elegant courtyard. For a panoramic view, ride a CABLE CAR to the San Ubaldo Basilica, which is famous as the end station for the Race of the Ceri, held in May. DAY 5 At Leisure in Assisi Full day at leisure to relax or to further explore the city. An interesting optional outing is available to Pienza, renowned for pecorino cheese, and to the Montepulciano wine area in Tuscany. Return to Assisi in the afternoon. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 6 Assisi. Excursion to Perugia & Todi Start your day in Perugia, capital of Umbria, and an important university town. A guided walking tour features the PIAZZA IV NOVEMBRE, one of the grandest squares in Italy, graced by the Fontana Maggiore. Admire the gothic cathedral, the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, and Perugia’s stunning medieval municipal palace. Time to explore on your own—don’t forget to shop for chocolates and other specialties, for which the town is famous, on Corso Vannucci. Next, visit hilltop Todi, originally an Etruscan frontier settlement and a prosperous town during the Middle Ages. It still has its three sets of walls: Etruscan, Roman, and medieval. On Piazza del Popolo, marvel at the 13th-century palaces, and from the terrace of PIAZZA GARIBALDI, enjoy a panoramic view of the valley and hills of Umbria before returning to Assisi. (Breakfast)
DAY 7 Assisi–Spoleto–Rome Leave Assisi and stop in Spoleto, a former Roman municipium and capital of an important Lombard duchy from the 6th to the 8th centuries. Spoleto is famous for the annual Festival dei Due Mondi, held each summer since 1958. During your walking tour with a Local Guide, take pictures of La Rocca, the former Papal fortress that was used as a high-security prison until 1982; admire the Ponte delle Torri, erected on the foundations of a Roman aqueduct; and visit PIAZZA DEL DUOMO. Cross the Highland Line and stop for photos of the “Bonnie Banks” of Loch Lomond, before ascending the mountain pass known as “Rest and be thankful.” Pause at Inveraray, seat of the Clan Campbell and situated on the shores of Loch Fyne, then follow the Pass of Brander to the pretty fishing port of Oban, where you board the FERRY to the beautiful Isle of Mull. DAY 3 Isle of Mull–Fort William–Culloden–Inverness A short FERRY crossing back to the Scottish mainland and then a fantastic drive on narrow winding roads and along lovely Loch Linnhe to Fort William beneath Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, are on this morning’s agenda. Then, follow the shores of Loch Lochy and Loch Ness, keeping a lookout for the mysterious monster. DAY 4 Inverness–Pitlochry–Dundee Start the day with a unique treat: admire a champion shepherd as he manipulates his flock with up to 10 border collies in a SHEEPDOG DISPLAY. Then, enjoy more spectacular Highland scenery as you drive through Cairngorms National Park and Glen Garry to the Victorian mountain resort of Pitlochry. This afternoon, visit a WHISKY DISTILLERY, where your guide explains the ancient art of converting barley, water, and yeast into a heart-warming liquor. DAY 5 Dundee–St. Andrews–Edinburgh A leisurely start to the day with a drive across the Tay Bridge to St. Andrews, whose Royal and Ancient Golf Club, founded in 1754, has given us the rules of golfing. A fun inclusion is the opportunity to hit a few balls at the ST. ANDREWS GOLF PRACTICE CENTRE. Continue on to Perth and a special visit to SCONE PALACE, the stately home of the Earl and Countess of Mansfield. Leaving bloodied history behind, follow the route through Callander to the Lake of Menteith and Aberfoyle in the picturesque forested region known as The Trossachs. DAY 8 Thurso. Excursion to the Orkney Islands A fascinating day full of adventure. At John o’Groats, board a FERRY for the 45-minute crossing to South Ronaldsay, one of the Orkney Islands, where a local coach and driver-guide await you. Cross the four Churchill Barriers and overlook Scapa Flow, where the German fleet scuttled itself in World War I. Visit the ITALIAN CHAPEL, built by prisoners of war in 1943 from scrap metal, concrete, and other materials. Then, head for SKARA BRAE, where you see the fascinating remains of a 5,000-year-old Neolithic village and visit SKAILL HOUSE. Yet more highlights: the Ring of Brodgar, the Orkneys’ Stonehenge, and finally Kirkwall, the small and picturesque island capital. Return to the mainland by FERRY in the late afternoon. DAY 9 Thurso–Ullapool–Isle of Skye A day to sit back and enjoy the breathtakingly wild and unspoiled scenery, some of the finest in Britain. The northern coast is lined with miles of yellow sandy beaches and pretty estuaries, and the hills and mountains take on a purple hue as the summer progresses. This is Scotland at its best! DAY 10 Isle of Skye Striking landscapes, weird rock formations and dramatic waterfalls will capture your attention on your drive around the Trotternish peninsula. Visit the thatch-roofed cottages at the MUSEUM OF ISLAND LIFE, close to the last resting place of Highland heroine Flora MacDonald, then follow the spectacular coast route, stopping for photos of waterfalls and gorges, to the island capital of Portree. DAY 2 Tokyo Meet your Tour Director and traveling companions prior to morning sightseeing in Tokyo, home to more than 8 million people. Your tour takes you to the MEIJI SHRINE, a magnificent 20th-century Shinto monument set in a man-made forest, followed by a drive to see the Imperial Palace Plaza. Next, visit an ARTIST’S STUDIO and enjoy demonstrations by a master calligrapher before trying it yourself. You will also have an opportunity to try on a traditional KIMONO and enjoy a TEA CEREMONY. DAY 4 Tokyo–Matsumoto–Takayama Journey to Matsumoto, gateway to the Japanese Alps. Visit famous MATSUMOTO CASTLE, dating back to 1593, and discover the history at the JAPAN FOLKLORE MUSEUM. After lunch, continue by motorcoach through the ruggedly beautiful Japanese Alps to the quiet, isolated town of Takayama, where old traditions are untouched by the passage of time. DAY 5 Takayama Today begins with a visit to the MORNING MARKET, where farmers display locally grown fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Then, on to the San-Machi Suji historic district, famous for sake distilleries and tiny lacquerware shops where merchants buy and sell as they have for 300 years. Visit the KUSAKABE HERITAGE HOUSE for a glimpse of traditional Japanese architecture of the late-19th century. In the afternoon, a short ride brings you to the HIDA MINZOKU-MURA FOLK VILLAGE, a collection of traditional buildings and farmhouses, as well as numerous artifacts relating to the life and work of the local villagers. DAY 6 Takayama–Shirakawa–Kanazawa This morning, enjoy a drive through the mountainous Shokawa Valley to Shirakawa. This remote region of Japan is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to the unique GASSHO-ZUKURI (joined hands)-style thatched houses that can be found only here. Continue to the scenic town of Kanazawa, situated between the mountains and the Sea of Japan and once the country’s richest region. Your Tour Director leads you on a tour of one of Japan’s greatest gardens, KENROKU-EN, the “Garden of Six Qualities,” dating from the 1670s. Adjacent to the garden is the ISHIKAWA PREFECTURE CRAFTS MUSEUM, displaying more than 30 traditional crafts, including the locally famous Kanazawa Haku gold leaf produced since 1593. Then, partake in a GOLD LEAF CLASS, where you make your own souvenir and learn more about this ancient traditional craft. Afterward, visit YUZEN HANDMADE CORNER to learn about the Yuzen dyeing technique used to decorate kimonos by painting dye directly on the cloth. DAY 9 Sydney So green and Gaelic is Cape Breton Island that Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell called it home for the last 37 years of his life. You can still see this heritage in the accents in some remote villages—and in the great popularity of Scottish-style folk music. DAY 6 Edinburgh Morning city sightseeing with a Local Guide introduces you to the 200-year-old “New Town” and famous scientists, inventors, and novelists. In the “Old Town,” drive up the narrow Royal Mile to EDINBURGH CASTLE to admire Scotland’s Crown Jewels, then explore HOLYROOD PALACE (except when the Queen is in residence). The afternoon is free to enjoy the Scottish capital at your own pace. Later, a unique optional experience: board the former Royal Yacht Britannia, once the perfect royal residence for the Queen’s glittering state visits and family holidays. Dinner rounds off this optional evening. For August 3 through August 19 departures, tickets are included for tonight’s performance of the world-renowned MILITARY TATTOO, a vast spectacle of massed Scottish pipe bands that takes place in an arena on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. DAY 7 Edinburgh–York, England Relax and enjoy vistas of the beautiful North Sea coastline as you drive via Berwick-upon-Tweed to Alnwick, voted the “best place to live in Britain” in a national survey. In York, England’s most complete medieval city, visit YORK MINSTER, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Then, follow your Tour Director through a maze of quaint streets, including the narrow Shambles. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 8 York–Stamford–Cambridge–London Leave Yorkshire and its associations with James Herriot, and drive through the richest farmland in Britain. Pause in the market town of Stamford before arriving in the beautiful university city of Cambridge. Return to London around 3:30 pm. DAY 1 Arrive in Amsterdam, Holland The day is free to rest or to start exploring the Dutch capital. At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel. (Dinner)
DAY 2 Amsterdam Start your discovery of Holland with a morning sightseeing tour of the capital with a Local Guide. Enjoy a CANAL CRUISE along gabled merchant houses and arched drawbridges reminiscent of the Golden Age, and the strikingly modern buildings of a young-at-heart city. Next, visit the fabulous RIJKSMUSEUM with priceless paintings by Rembrandt and other Dutch masters. Then, time to explore Dam Square and the city center on your own, or join your Tour Director for a visit to a major DIAMOND CENTER to appreciate how a rough mineral is transformed into a sparkling jewel. Afternoon at leisure. You may want to join an optional excursion to the fishing village of Volendam at the former Zuiderzee. (Breakfast)
DAY 3 Amsterdam. Excursion to Aalsmeer, Delft, The Hague & Keukenhof A scenic day. Start with an early visit to the impressive AALSMEER FLOWER AUCTION, where more than 17 million flowers and two million plants are sold each day. Next, continue to the world-renowned ROYAL DELFT POTTERY FACTORY with its magnificent collection of hand-painted earthenware pieces, and see skilled craftsmen at work. After an orientation drive of The Hague, seat of the Dutch government and the International Court of Justice, continue to the famous bulbfields of South Holland and visit the extraordinary flower park of KEUKENHOF (departures 0407-0512) before returning to Amsterdam. DAY 4 Amsterdam–Venlo–Bastogne, Belgium–Luxembourg Today’s highlight is your included visit to the once-in-a-decade World Horticultural Exhibition, the FLORIADE. Next, cross the Belgium border and stop in Bastogne at the AMERICAN MEMORIAL of the Battle of the Bulge. Late-afternoon arrival in Luxembourg, the capital of one of Europe’s smallest sovereign states. (Breakfast, Dinner)
DAY 5 Luxembourg Morning sightseeing with your Local Guide covers the city’s past and present, from the fortifications and the Old Town, perched high atop a sandstone outcrop with striking views of the Alzette and Pétrusse Gorges, to the modern administrative center of European institutions. Visit the CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY, see the turreted Grand Ducal Palace, take a stroll along the panoramic cliff path known as “the most beautiful balcony in Europe,” and see the GRAVE OF GENERAL PATTON. An optional excursion to Trier in Germany can be arranged. (Breakfast)
DAY 6 Luxembourg–Waterloo, Belgium–Brussels A highlight visit today: drive through the Belgian Ardennes to WATERLOO, where Napoleon was defeated and European history changed course. Your Lion Hamlet Pass gives you access to the Visitor’s Center, where the Lion Mound, the films, and the Panorama help you relive the famous Battle of Waterloo. Arrive in Brussels, the thriving capital, where your orientation features the Rue Royale, the Parliament Buildings, the Royal Palace, and Saint Michel Cathedral. Admire GRAND’PLACE with its baroque guild houses, the gothic Town Hall, and take pictures of the statue of Manneken Pis. (Breakfast)
DAY 7 Brussels. Excursion to Bruges Most of today is dedicated to Bruges, one of Western Europe’s most perfectly preserved medieval towns. A CANAL CRUISE (weather permitting) will give you your first feel of this delightful town. Your Local Guide will show you the Madonna of Bruges by Michelangelo in the CHURCH OF OUR LADY and the famous MARKET SQUARE. Also enjoy a traditional LACE DEMONSTRATION. Then, time for souvenir hunting and exploring on your own before returning to Brussels. (Breakfast)
DAY 8 At Leisure in Brussels Full day at leisure. You may want to join a half-day optional excursion to Antwerp, the second-largest Belgian city and one of the world’s most important ancient seaports. Visit the famous Rockox House, where the art collector and friend of Rubens lived; the Plantin-Moretus Museum, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the early days of book printing in the 16th century; the Grote Markt; and the Church of Our Lady to admire two of the most important triptychs by Rubens.
